Bike hire in Clyde, Central Otago
SheBikesHeBikes hires bikes and e-bikes from its Clyde depot at 13 Fraser St, in the old Clyde railway station, open 8:30am to 5pm every day.
Clyde sits where four of Central Otago's best rides meet. The Otago Central Rail Trail starts here, the Lake Dunstan Trail runs north to Cromwell, and the River Track leads south to Alexandra and the Roxburgh Gorge. Because all of them start here, you can hire a bike once and spend several days riding a different trail each day.
Where can you ride a hire bike from Clyde?
Pick the ride first, because it decides whether a standard bike or an e-bike suits you better. Tap a ride for its full details and to book.
Clutha Loop
Out along the River Track to Alexandra and back on the Rail Trail. Flat and easy, so a standard bike is fine.
View rideRail Trail via Poolburn Gorge
Shuttle out to Auripo, then ride back to Clyde through its tunnels and over the tallest viaduct on the trail. It's long but gentle. An e-bike makes the distance easy.
View rideLake Dunstan Trail
Boardwalks clipped to the Cromwell Gorge cliffs and the steep Cairnmuir climb. We recommend an e-bike.
View rideRoxburgh Gorge Trail
A full day. Ride to Alexandra, take a jet boat with your bike through the unfinished section, then ride to the Roxburgh dam and take the shuttle back.
View rideDeVineCycle Clyde
A cellar-door ride between Clyde and Alexandra, starting at the Clyde railway station.
View rideStandard bike or e-bike?
On the flat Grade 1 rides, the Clutha Loop and the Rail Trail, most riders are comfortable on a standard bike. An e-bike earns its keep on the Lake Dunstan Trail, where the Cairnmuir section climbs steeply above the lake. It also helps on a long day like the 55 km Poolburn ride, if you'd rather arrive with energy left for the evening.

Staying more than a day
Clyde is the starting depot for most multi-day Otago Central Rail Trail trips and for the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold trails. Luggage transfers and shuttles can be arranged for the whole trip.
If you have only a few days, base yourself in Clyde: its gold-rush stone buildings, cafés and quiet main street make it an easy place to come back to each evening. Olivers serves platters and wine tastings, and Three Miners, Ruru and Monte Christo are all on the Clutha Loop.
